Chwiedczuk / Rimmer / Richards Connection
"... 2. I was born with the name LYDIA CHWIEDCZUK on 10 July 1926 in Poland. After migrating to Canada with my parents in 1929, I began school in 1931 and since starting school I have always spelled my first name LYDIA and was known as LYDIA CHWEDCHUK. My parents and myself found that our polish name spelled CHWIEDCZUK was too difficult for Canadians to pronounce and so since coming to Canada our family anglicized the polish spelling of our family to CHWEDCHUK. This is the spelling on my Marriage Certificate.
3. On June 23, 1945 in Welland, Ontario I married the deceased Michael Richards. At that time, he was known as RichardMichael[Added in pen: Joseph] Rimmer. This is the shown on my marriage certificate. In June 1947, because of severe family difficulty and deep humiliation my husband moved to Ridgetown, Ontario to get away from his family. The friction was so great that he ceased to be known as Richard Michael Rimmer and began using the name Michael Richards. This in his mind, started his life affresh [sic]. When I joined my husband in August 1947, in Ridgetown I was known as Lydia Richards... Since August 1947, I have always used the name Lydia Richards and am now in theprocess [sic] of legally changing my name to Lydia Richards ... I have no birth certificate for my late husband and do not know exactly where he was born, except somewhere in England.
4. LIDIA CHWIEDCZUK, LYDIA CHWEDCHUK, LYDIA RIMMER, and LYDIA RICHARDS is one and the same person, and I am that person.
5. Michael Richards and Richard Michael Rimmer is one and the same person who died January 17, 1970 and to whom I have been married since 23 June 1945 ...

Canada - Passenger Lists: June 1, 1921 to December 31, 1924
From June 1, 1921 to December 31, 1924, the Department of Immigration and Colonization required that individual manifests (Form 30A, RG 76 C1j) be completed and submitted to the immigration officers at the ports of arrival, instead of the large sheet passenger list manifests previously in use. A form had to be submitted for each passenger, including children, except those in transit to the United States. The use of Form 30A was discontinued as of January 1, 1925. From that date, the use of large sheet manifests was reinstated.
For Rimmer: The following microfilm at the Archives of Canada can be consulted - T-15172 (Riley, Rupert George to Robbins, Ethel .... Surname groupings: Riley, Ri, Ritchie, Ri, Ro, Robb, Robbins)
When consulting the Form 30A records, be aware that in most cases each form was microfilmed with the backside first, followed by the front of the form.
Please note that the Archives of Canada Passenger List database is not complete (as of July 19, 2010). To date, it includes only the following:
Passenger lists (RG 76) were the official immigration documents from 1865 to 1935. The lists contain information such as the name, age, country of origin, occupation and destination of each passenger. The lists are organized by port and date of arrival. This database provides access to passenger lists for the following ports:

"... she "[Lydia] eventually ended up marrying Richard Rimmer, a man in an army uniform ... "
"That summer, on June 23, 1945, my sister got married, and I made the trip to Welland by train for the wedding. It was one of those affairs with both Canadian and Ukrainian traditions, the marriage being performed by Rev. Fern A. Sales [Rev. Fern Sayles - Sayles was associated with the United Church All Peoples’ Mission in Crowland] of the Peoples Church in Crowland, and the reception with Ukrainian polkas and various waltzes taking place at the farm home ..."
"We did know that he [Rimmer] was a Sergeant in the army, that he was about ten years older than Lydia who was only nineteen, that he had been married before [to Wynne Rimmer] and had a daughter [Jo-Anne Rimmer m. Robert James Carruthers, Scarborough, Toronto - m. February 27, 1960] who was about sixteen years old at the time, and that his father was a construction contractor in Toronto ..."

"Richard started to gamble at cards after being discharged from the army, or perhaps even before, and soon ran up substantial debts which got him into trouble with his gambling buddies. To get out of that hot frying pan, he foolishly jumped into the fire, and ended up as as refugee from the law, hiding out as hired help for Jack Hymers, a farmer neat [sic: near] Ridgetown, Ont., under the assumed name of Mike Richards ..."

"Went to bed and then got up to keep on reading your [Eric Krause's] site. Did I not send you the stuff from England and Ireland that have the actual births of Dad, brother and I think sister and that Dad's dad was Joseph Rimmer and his Mom was Mary Morrissey from Cork Ireland? I am still reading but a bit confused as I have the info and maybe I did not send it along. I am sure I still have it. I also have all the STUFF from Fernie about Rick [Richards, where he worked for a time and died in an auto accident] and I thought I gave Lynda [Krause] copies but really not sure at this time . I also did not know that most of your family came from South Russia. Very interesting. I did not know that Dad was in hiding. I knew he changed his name but Mom has given me a story that he worked for a Jeweler [Peoples Credit Jewellers] and took money for gambling and Ernie Goldhawk paid his debt when he landed in Ridgetown and that is all I knew . Mom always said that she left him with Rick and Lynda and lived with Nanny [Alexandra (Sonia) Maximovna [Shalagin] Chwedchuk (November 6, 1902-April 16, 1984)] on the farm [in Welland] and then he got the job in Ridgetown and Ernie paid and Dad changed his name there when Lynda and Rick were just going to school. I found out this when I had to take Mom to Windsor to get her name changed to Chwedchuck, Rimmer and Richards and all the same as she was trying to collect her Old Age Pension and then I was not sure if her story was 100% correct. Mom has always said Dad was born in Cork Ireland but his birth certificate says Manchester, England [Oldham, Greater Manchester, formerly Oldham in the County of Lancashire] but Mom says he was raised for a long time in Cork ...."

Mom said that Nanny and Grand dad always when [sic: went] to the Greek Orthodoist [sic: Orthodox] church in Russia ... Apparently, Dad was an alter boy and did it all for the Catholic church. Remember, I found out Dad was born in Lancaster [Oldham, County of Lancashire], England, but went to Cork, Ireland, to be raised for a long time. His family, went back to England and thats [sic: that's] when his father was booted out of England for dog raceing and they moved to Toronto and his father was a big shot in construction in TO and great grandfather died in a scrap on the street in TO when someone hit him and he hit his head and died ...

The boys sat on one side, and the girls on the other. The above scene looks to
be a boys camp.
