GUNTHER FREDERICK KRAUSE

• GUNTHER FREDERICK KRAUSE. Among Portland's able lawyers and highly respected citizens stands Gunther F. Krause, who is regarded as a leader in his special field of practice, that of maritime law, in which he is meeting with a very gratifying measure of success. A native of Portland, he was born on the 12th day of July, 1895, a son of August and Bertha (Peisel) Krause. His father was born in Liegnitz, Silesia, Germany, February 4, 1861, and was there reared and educated. In 1887 he came to the United States, locating in Tacoma, Washington, where he lived for three years. He is a minister of the Evangelical Lutheran church and since 1890 has served continuously as pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church, at East Twelfth and Clinton streets, Portland, a period of thirty-eight years. He plans to retire from the active ministry in the present year. In 1893, in Chicago, Illinois, he married Miss Bertha Peisel, who was born in Bischofswerda, Saxony, Germany, March 31, 1867. They had been sweethearts in their native country and she came to this country to become his wife. Her death occurred in 1928. They had four children, namely: Helmeth Edward, born March 7, 1894, graduated from Reed College, in Portland, and received the degree of Bachelor of Laws from the Law school of New York University, after which he engaged in the practice of his profession in that city. He enlisted for service in the World war and became a band leader, but was not ordered overseas. Roland Ernest, born August 29, 1897, had two years in Reed College, then enlisted in the United States navy and was engaged in transport service during the World war, after which he remained in the navy and is now a lieutenant on the United States cruiser "Omaha." Gertrude Anna, born April 22, 1903, graduated from Reed College with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and is now a teacher in the Portland high school.

Mittelschule Bischofswerda - Middle School Bischofswerda

• Am 31. März 1864 wurde die Schule eingeweiht. Damit die Schüler auch Sport treiben konnten, wurde 1878 auf der Bautzner Straße eine Sporthalle gebaut. Ein weiteres Schulgebäude wurde am 28.09.1901, neben dem ersten Gebäude, eingweiht. 1906 wurden die Schulen als Allgemeine Volksschule zusammengeführt ... In den Jahren 1914/15 wurde ein Verbindungsbau zwischen den beiden Gebäuden errichtet ...

  1878 Auf der Bautzener Straße wird eine Turnhalle gebaut. [Friedrich Wilhelm Krause (January 18, 1897 - December 9, 1983) was an excellent gymnast while in school]
  28.09.1901 Die Einweihung eines neuen Schulgebäudes findet neben der alten Schule statt.
  1906 Die Zusammenführung beider Schulen als Einheitsschule bzw. Allgemeine Volksschule erfolgt.
  1914/15 Ein Verbindungsbau zwischen den Gebäuden wird errichtet.

The two schools were administered and supervised separately. Later in the century, two additional types of school emerged: the Realgymnasium , which substituted modern languages for the classics, and the Oberrealschule , which emphasized mathematics and science. Most children, however, could not attend the schools that prepared students for the professions or university entrance because of the schools' high standards and long duration. Hence, around the turn of the century, the Mittelschule , or middle school, was introduced to meet parental demand for expanded educational and economic opportunities. Children entered the Mittelschule after three years of elementary school, and they attended that school for six years ...
