APPLIED ROOF TECHNOLOGY LTD - Roof Consultants for Slate, Tile, Wood & Sheet Metal in the Restoration and Conservation of Historic Buildings.


Introduction

The principal of Applied Roof Technology is Philip Hoad, who holds a BA (Honors) from Greenwich University in London, England.

Philip has been in the roofing industry as a manufacturer, contractor and consultant for over 25 years in both England and Canada. He was formerly a Contracts Manager with Marley Roof Tiles Ltd and a Director of Roof Tile Management Inc, responsible for both heritage restoration and new construction projects throughout Southern England and latterly Central & Eastern Canada.

His practical and extensive experience in historic roofing and sheet metalwork enables him to offer a unique and broad range of professional consulting and contracting services to architects, engineers, heritage professionals and building owners, having special skills and knowledge in the traditional materials of Slate, Tile and Wood Roofing along with all types and forms of Sheet Metalwork.

Philip is a professional member of the Canadian Association of Professional Heritage Consultants (CAPHC) and the Association for Preservation Technology International (APTI), and has presented numerous seminars and demonstrations on heritage roofing and materials in both Canada and the USA.
 

   During the period 2002 - 2003, he completed the site supervision of a two year multi-million dollar roofing and masonry restoration project on the King's Bastion Barracks at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site of Canada in Nova Scotia, for Public Works and Government Services Canada. Following this Philip was Technical Services Coordinator for Parks Canada at The Fortress of Louisbourg between 2004 - 2007, where he was responsible for a multi-disciplined trades and services team involved in both the maintenance and recapitalization of a reconstructed 18th Century French fortified town.

During 2007 - 2009, he was Senior Project Manager for Acadia University, where he was responsible for multi-million dollar new construction, renovation and restoration projects. Founded in 1838, Acadia has become one of the leading Canadian Universities occupying 250 acres with some 50 buildings in the Town of Wolfville, located in the beautiful Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia.

In July 2009, Philip was appointed to the position of Capital Projects Manager with the Culture Division, Community Services at the City of Hamilton in Ontario, where he is responsible for all capital works on National Historic Sites, Museums, Heritage Buildings and Monuments administered by the City's Culture Division. Within his project portfolio is the restoration of Auchmar Estate, the former home of the Hon. Isaac Buchanan. Constructed in 1854 and located on 10 acres of what Buchanan called Clairmont Park, it was considered an elegant example of gothic revival architecture with its arched windows, eleven chimneys, gables, and French doors.

  • Condition surveys including access for close range inspection, material analysis, selective demolition and testing.
  • Written reports and photographs, typical and specific failures, recommendations for remedial and repair work.
  • Budget costings, scheduling and phasing of restoration work required.
  • Preparation and / or review of tender and specification documents.
  • Site reviews, inspections and materials testing.
  • Full service contracting, project management and / or resident site supervision.
  • Educational presentations, seminars and trade skills training.
We are also able to draw upon the skills of other specific Heritage Building Specialists such as Architects, Engineers and Planners, should this be required.

Fee Structure

Our fees will depend largely on the geographical location, complexity of the project, building accessibility, time required and the level of detail required.

We are able to provide our services on the basis of either a fixed price or alternatively at an hourly rate plus expenses and disbursements, to suit client needs and requirements.
