• The following table shows changes in the Molotschna Colony list of voters through the years 1847, 1850, 1857 and 1862. Only landowners who owned a Wirtschaft could vote in village or Colony elections. The number of Wirtschaften in each village was fixed and each Wirtschaft was given a number which did not change over the years. Therefore it is possible to compare voter lists and see who gave up or obtained p ro perty from one list to another. These voter lists were compiled during September or October. Those who were elected took office in January of the next year. A few important points should be made:
   
• 1) By this time close to half of all families in the Mennon ite colonies were landless. As a result these lists are missing about one half of the family heads for the Molotschna colony.
• 2) On rare occasions a property passed between two people with the same name. This is not taken into account in this list.
• 3) The given names and surnames have been standardized for easier searching. For example , Gerz. Gertz, Goerz, Goertz, Gerzen, Goertzen, etc. are ALL combined under Goertzen. The names in this list do NOT reflect the true spelling of the person’s name. The origina l lists were usually compiled by the village secretaries and the voters wrote in the names of the person(s) for whom they voted . In some cases the secretary also wrote in for whom the person was voting . Therefore most of the names found in the original are spel led the way the recording secretary thought they should be spelled. For example, in the 1850 list, only the villages of Fischau, Ohrloff and Hutterthal have signatures.
• 4) The village of Hierschau was founded in 1848 and so does not appear on the 1847 vote rs list.
• 5) For some reason the household heads in Berdyansk were allowed to vote in the 1850 election even though they did not own a Wir tschaft in the Molotschna colony.
• 6) The villages of Nikolaidorf (1851), Paulsheim (1852) and Kleefeld (1854) were founde d between the 1850 and 1857 lists. The Hutterite village of Johannesruh was also established during this time period.
• 7) The villages of Alexanderkrone, Mariawohl, Friedensruh and Steinfeld were established in 1857 and appear for the first time i n the 1862 list.
• 8) Sometime before 1862 a community of artisans was established in Halbstadt under the title of "Handwerkgemeinde". These household heads are found in the 1862 list under Halbstadt and I have added "Handwerkgemeinde" to the comments column for them .
• 9) Sometime between 1850 and 1857 ten new properties (and voters) were added to the village of Wernersdorf. 10) If no voter name appears next to a Wirtschaft number I have written “none .
