Dear Eric,

My cousin sent me the link to your web page and I have been looking though it with considerable interest. She and I are both grandchidren of Cornelius K. Krause and Margarethe Rempel who lived in Kitchener after their arrival in 1925 from Molotschna where they lived in the village of Gnadenfeld. I am a retired librarian and genealogist from Ottawa. I have been collecting information on my Mennonite roots and we share a number of common ancestral names, particularly Krause, Dueck and Mathies.

I do not find a connection between our Krause families, although my grandfather was born in Rosenhof in the Schönfeld Colony. I must confess, however, that my branch of the Krause family has had considerable difficulty in tracing its Krause roots. My grandfather's mother was Agatha Dueck. She was married twice and had seven surviving children. About 20 of their descendants continue to participate in a "Rundbrief" which circulates around North America 3 or 4 times a year. As I understand it, the Rundbrief was started in the 1920s by my grandparents' generation so that they could keep in touch with their scattered families. Agatha Dueck was a daughter of Susanna Mathies and there I have found the connection with your family--Susanna was a sister of your ancestor, David Mathies and that makes us fourth cousins through the Mathies line.

I thought I would make this initial contact and perhaps we can share additional information. I would be particularly interested in any information that you have regarding the Mathies family. My information is very sketchy, having come from a book published by a cousin in 1976 which documented my Dueck ancestry in some detail but failed to give information on the extended families.

Best wishes from Ottawa,
Ralph W. Manning
