JACOB SCHELLENBERG Passed away April 2, 2010. Born in Tiegenhagen, Ukraine on May 24, 1923. He immigrated in 1925 and learned to walk on the passage over, arriving in Halifax [actually in St. John, New Brunswick] on the Melita of the C.P.R. line. His family settled in southwestern Ontario [On December 8, they arrived in Coatsworth, Ontario, at the home of Jacob H. Kornelson (March 14, 1899-April 10, 1948), brother of Maria Mietz Kornelsen (May 5, 1900 - April 2, 1991]. In the 1930s he documented his keen interest of cars, trucks, farm ploughs and ocean liners in many scrapbooks. Dad loved to tell stories about family and work experiences. There was the one where he lost his front teeth in a collision with friend Pete Schroeder on Halloween or the band he played button accordion in at the work camp in Montreal River where he was conscripted during the war. After the return of his brother-in-law, John Mathies, [Johnny Mathies, deceased, and Kitchener cousin of Annie (Mathies) Krause (February 25, 1923 - June 2, 1998)] from the war they bought a truck and started the first of many trucking companies. Another great story, the runaway truck loaded with manure crashing into the hair salon. The next venture, Leamington Transport, led Jake to Winnipeg where he met Mom at the Y.M.C.A. Young People's Club. Their first date was Good Friday in 1957. They were married Valentines Day 1959 and drove to Florida for their honeymoon. Twins Gerry and Lynn came the next year and in 1961 another trucking venture relocated them to the Maritimes. Marjorie was born in 1962 and David in 1966. We lived in a house on top of a hill overlooking the Saint John River, our country paradise, Westfield. Thanks Dad. Here comes the 1970s. Trucking led us to Dartmouth, NS and this became the place we identified with. Dad and Mom retired in 1988 and decided to return to Winnipeg. Jack and Elaine were best friends. They talked and they played. Dad was an active member of the Lions Club for over 40 years. Particularly dear to him was the Lions connection to Guide Dogs and the annual Dog walk-a-thon. His final wish was to donate his body to the University of Manitoba. Jacob was predeceased by his dad Gerhard [August 26, 1871-June 29, 1962], mom Sara [[Sarah] Sara KORNELSEN (February 5, 1882 - c. October 12, 1979, Leamington), sister of Heinrich Kornelsen ( April 17, 1876 - 1947), the father of Maria Mietz Kornelsen (May 5, 1900 - April 2, 1991)], sister Mary, brother George and by his son, David in 1995. He his survived by his sister Helen Mathies, wife Elaine (Mennell), son Gerry, daughters Lynn (Eric) and Marjorie, four grandchildren, William, Jake, Emily and Mary and many other family members, all of them loved. Thanks to Dr. Permack and the staff of the 4th Floor Victoria Hospital and to Homecare. Memoriam and service to be held Friday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m., Churchill Park United, 525 Beresford. Rev. Janet Walker officiating.

We were in the glass-covered market hall (Passaz) and on the Red Square we saw the mausoleum. We bought a pair of gloves and some grey thread from a Jew. Unfortunately, I later lost the gloves from my coat pocket ...Our Emigration from Tiegenhagen ....
Before our departure [fromTiegenhagen] on November 5 [1925] ...
At night we reached Orel and on November 9 we reached Tula. Here we bought "Tulskije Prjaniki" (a kind of spice cookies) for the occasion of Marichen's birthday [Mariechen Kornelsen [Marie Kornelsen] (February 2, 1897, Tiegenhagen - January 4, 1971, Leamington), sister of Heinrich Kornelsen ( April 17, 1876 - 1947), the father of Maria Mietz Kornelsen (May 5, 1900 - April 2, 1991)], married to Heinrich Willms (September 21, 1896 - March 5, 1975) - Clearly the birthdates conflict.]
On Tuesday, November 10, we arrived at the Kursk railway in Moscow ...
Towards evening Marichen [Mariechen] and I went to the Ljubljanskaja Ploschtschad (Ljubljanskaja Square). On November 12, ...
We bought a very nice suit with shiny buttons for Jacob ...
Without our realizing it, the ship [Baltara] stopped at Danzig at 10:00 P.M., as we [
Gerhard Jacob Schellenberg, August 26, 1871 - June 29, 1962] were told it would. Even though the sea was calm, Sarah Bold and her children became seasick. In the evening of November 23, we entered the Kaiser Wilhelm canal at Kiel. Unfortunately, it was already dark, and we could not see much. The lighting, however, was magnificient. Officials came on board; their German language sounded beautiful. To the officials, I handed letters to Russia and a picture postcard for W. Krausen [Frederick Wilhelm Krause, January 18, 1897 - December 9, 1983] in Bischofswerden [Bischofswerda], Sachsen .....On Wednesday, November 25, we arrived in London in the evening ...
November 26 ... on the train ... to Southhampton ...
On Saturday, November 28, we embarked on the ocean steamer "Melita" ...
Sara, Lenchen and Jascha did not feel well ... Sara was in bed all day ...
In the morning I wanted to dispatch a telegram to Jacob Kornelsen in Coatsworth. The interpreter did not find Coatsworth, only Coatwold. Thus the telegram was dispatched to Jacob Kornelsen in Coatswold. It said "Landing Sunday in St. John. Are coming to Waterloo. Gerhard Schellenberg" ...
On the ninth day, a Sunday, On December 6, 1925 at 1:30 P.M. we arrived safely in St. John, N.B., Canada ... Like many others, I had written Waterloo, Ontario as point of destination before my departure. This was also stated on all the luggage tags ...
Then we got on the train, which was already waiting. It consisted of seven cars, of which five were destined for the West, by way of Winnipeg and two for Leamington, by way of Montreal, Toronto and Windsor ...
Altogether, there were eighty-seven people in the two cars ...
On Monday, December, December 7, we we arrived at 5:00 P.M. in Montreal. We travelled across a bridge which spans the St. Lawrence river.
Here our two cars were separated from the rest. We watched the other five pass us by on their way to the West [by way of Winnipeg]. We bade farewell to Sarah's parents [
Jacob H. Kornelsen, August 1, 1849-May 6, 1926 and Helena Martens (June 15, 1851-June 8, 1945)] [on their way to the West by way of Winnipeg]...In the evening our two cars continued from Montreal ...
When we arrived in Waterloo at 10:00 A.M., most people got off. Among them were the Willms, the Epps, the A. Rempels and the Peter Friesens.
A Willms' family and my family continued on to Windsor together, where we arrived at 2:00 P.M. at the C.P.R. station. From there we went to the streetcar-stop by taxi for eighty cents. Our travelling companions apart from the Willms couple, were a bachelofr and three spinsters. We drove to Kingsville in the streetcar. From there Johann Schroeder (formerly of Halbstadt) and G. Dick (formerly of Tiege) took us in their car to Leamington. Here the two organized a taxi for both us and the Willms.
For the twenty-eight miles to Coatsworth I paid $6.00. When we arrived at 6:00 P.M. at the Jacob Kornelsens, it was already dark. Jacob, who was in the yard at the time, came to the taxi and welcomed us. Now we had arrived at our destination in Canada. The trip had lasted thirty-three days, from November 5 to December 8.
