(I) POSITION:
Webmaster
(II) STATUS:
Part-Time (150 hours per year)
(III) DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Webmaster is responsible for the PLANNING, DEVELOPMENT, MANAGEMENT, EVOLUTION and MAINTENANCE of the Louisbourg's World Wide Web Site ( fortress.uccb.ns.ca - presently 32 individual, multi-layered websites under the main banner) which supports a number of PRIORITY INITIATIVES including advancing a public awareness of the informational resources of the Fortress of Louisbourg, National Historic Site; for disseminating information that will enhance the place of the Fortress, Louisbourg harbour, and the natural and cultural heritage movement; for promoting tourism where appropriate; for presenting general information on Parks Canada, Cape Breton Region; and for confining the period under review to 1713 to the present.
The Webmaster will demonstrate a mind-set that recognizes what is and what is not valuable content (historical, market-focussed, etc.) at the Fortress of Louisbourg for posting to Web fortress.uccb.ns.ca and will develop systems to facilitate its rapid finding.
An essential technical duty requires the Webmaster to be the SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR for the Institute's demonstration server at his location and, through PCAnywhere dial-in, for the Internet server at Web fortress.uccb.ns.ca
The Webmaster will publish FrontPage html and image content to the Internet server at Web fortress.uccb.ns.ca via modem using PCAnywhere.
The Webmaster will publish DbTextworks database content to the Internet server at Web fortress.uccb.ns.ca via modem using windows NT explorer and directory mappings.
The Webmaster will obtain DbTextworks databases, word processing files, and image files from the Fortress of Louisbourg through visitations to the Fortress of Louisbourg Archives/Library. An understanding of the various Fortress of Louisbourg Information systems is essential: i.e. A functional understanding of the English and French languages and an understanding of the Fortress of Louisbourg Paper and Electronic Informational systems to allow for the transfer of information resources to Web fortress.uccb.ns.ca
There will be periodic meetings/e-mail correspondence with the Fortress of Louisbourg, to determine the direction of the Website
The Webmaster will answer all public web queries to the e-mail, guest-book, and assorted forum gateways.
The Webmaster position requires excellent oral and written COMMUNICATIONS, project MANAGEMENT and ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS, as well as a demonstrated ability to work WITHOUT SUPERVISION, but as a TEAM PLAYER when required.
The Webmaster must display a previous ability to manage LARGE PROJECTS with a demonstrated ability to deliver a result within the designated time frame.
The Webmaster will keep UP-TO-DATE on web technologies through e-mail alerts from appropriate on-line subscriptions.
(IV) REPORTING LINE:
The Webmaster reports to the Louisbourg Institute of the University College of Cape Breton.
(V) QUALIFICATIONS:
The following special, discrete skills are required.

SETTING UP BASIC WEB SITES

ENGLISH~FRENCH WEB SITE DESIGN / CREATION / PLACEMENT / EDITING / UPDATING / REWORKING / REDESIGN
Functional understanding of the English and French languages
Functional understanding of Frontpage (HTML, Java, JavaScript, etc.)
Functional understanding of Photoshop (Images)
Functional understanding of Web conversion tools (Text and Image files)
Functional understanding of Scanners and Omnipage Pro (Optical Character Recognition ~ OCR) software
Periodic updates of the site's "look"
Experiment with new processes
General review of the design of the site with the Fortress of Louisbourg committee and implementation of recommendations - to increase accessibility

SCANNING/OCR
[4 reports (c. 400 pages) per year]
Functional understanding of Scanners and Omnipage Pro (Optical Character Recognition ~ OCR) software to produce text for future manipulation (i.e. add to databases or to html fully designed, properly linked pages)

(4) MAINTENANCE OF SITES
Repair of broken hyper links
Repair of bookmarks
Removal of unlinked files
Correction of component errors (e.g. banners, hit counters, hover buttons, java applets),
Removal of outdated or unfinished sites
The monitoring of web forum and guest book content,
Spelling error/grammar corrections
Regular checking of search engine(s) to ensure it is not corrupted
(5) MANAGEMENT/HOUSEKEEPING RESPONSIBILITIES
(A) WEB SERVER MAINTENANCE / SECURITY / UPGRADING
Functional understanding of the English language
Functional understanding of Microsoft Internet Information Server and timely security patch applications
Ensure that the Internet Information Server software at the University College of Cape Breton continues to meet Institute requirements and make periodic recommendations as to upgrades.

Ensure that the server is provided adequate protection from hackers, computer viruses and virus signatures
Ensure that the WIN2000 Server at the University College of Cape Breton continues to meet Institute requirements and make periodic recommendations as to upgrades
Arrange for repairs when required
Back up all files published by the web master, a requirement to protect the originals from a catastrophic disaster
