Plotts of four Town Lotts in Block C. in the Town of Sydney improved and inclosed by Samuel Sparrow Esquire were laid [on July 16, 1787] before the Board and [the?] claimed M^r Cuyler made to them was taken into consideration And David Tait Esquire who had been been [sic] employed in laying out the Town of Sydney being called and requested and requested to certify to the Board what he knew respecting the said Lotts.

    The said David Tait declared in Oath that the Lotts [alluded] to were Assigned to M^r. John Wilkinson Mr Sparrows Agent in the Month of June 1785 ...

• "William Plant ... travelled on to Sydney, arriving on Nov. 17 [1784] ... Sarah [Plant] arrived in Sydney from London, via Halifax, July 10, 1786, with her two sons ..."

• "A map of downtown Sydney from 1795 shows the Plant property. Submitted by the Beaton Institute ..."

• "The James Miller map of 1795, a copy of which is housed at the Beaton Institute, reveals the Plants had put up a home for their growing family. This map of the town of Sydney identifies the property on Charlotte Street (west side) at the south side of the corner of York Street as belonging to Plant, clerk of coal duty and deputy clerk of council.
       In the [1795] list of present inhabitants of the town, this household is noted as having one male (William) and one female head (Sarah) of household, five male children under the age of 14, and one female servant/lodger under the age of 14.
       William [1760-January 1, 1805] and Sarah [Lowey, 1760-September 25, 1844] had a total of nine children:

  • Samuel John Plant born at New  York, Sept. 4, 1781, died in New York, April 2, 1782;

  • William Plant, born at New York, March 5, 1783; [d 1869]

  • James Plant born in London, Jan. 22, 1785, died unknown date 1877; [[died died January 13, 1803 or 1807 in Sydney]]

This Indenture made 27^th Sep^r in the twenty seventh year of the Reign of George the third of Great Britain King & in the year of our Lord 1787 between John Rundle of Sydney Island Cape Breton Merch^t of the one part & Samuel Sparrow of the said Town of Sydney Merchant of the other part Witnesses for and in Consideration & towards the satisfaction of the Sum of four Hundred & Twelve Pounds Nova Scotia Currency to the said John Rundle in hand by the said Samuel Sparrow at and before the Sealing & delivery of those Present, the receipt whereof  the said John Rundle hath hereby Acknowledge & Confess and thereof & of every part & [leave?] thereof, doth freely fully and Absolutely Acquit exonerate and discharge the said Samuel Sparrow his Executor Administrator and Assign by these Present, he the said John Rundle Hath Demised Granted and to farme letton, and by these Present Doth Demise Grant and to Farme let unto the said Samuel Sparrow his Executor Administrator and Assign All that [piece of?] land or lott of land and laid out and plotted in Block C Adjoining and Butting to the North on a Lot of Ground in the same Block C belonging to Doctor Aubrey [Block C, Lot 5] and to the South on a Lot [Block C, Lot 7?] of Ground belonging to the said Samuel Sparrow situated & being in a Street called North Charlotte Street extending in front on said street forty feet and carrying the same extent of Front backward to the Depth of One hundred feet with all the [right] Priviledges & benefits there unto belong or Appertant thereto, Together with a Dwelling House or Messuage [Iro tton?] high erected there on, and all the Appurtenances with the Gardens Fences, Water and Watercourses belonging or Appertaining to the same All which said land [piece?] or Lott of Ground Dwelling House or Tenements, Gardens, Fences, Water & Watercourses and the Revision or Revissions Remaindor or Remaining thereof, and all the Right Title Interest Property Claim on Demand whatsoever of him the said John Rundle, in and to the same, and all [Deeds] Writings and Evidences touching and concerning the said several [quite Nemisis?], which he the said John Rundle hath in his hands or Custody To Have and to Hold, all and singular the said land [piece?] or lot of Ground Messuage or Tenements Heriditaments and Promises hereby demised intent mentioned or intended to be hereby demised with their and every of their rights Members and Appurtenances unto the said Sam^l Sparrow his Executor, Administrator and Assign from the day of the date here of unto the full end and Term of One thousand Years next ensuing and fully to be completed and ended Yielding and laying therefore yearly& every year during the said term unto the said John Rundle his Hiers or Assign the yearly rent of one pepper Corn at the Feast of St. Michael [Note: from this point on, the left hand margin has missing letters designated by [?] owing to the tight binding] the Lawfully demands, Provided always and upon their condition [?]if the said John Rundle his Heir Executor or Administrator, [shall?] and do will and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said [Sam?]uel Sparrow his Executor [Note: There is a Frederick Aubery who would receive a grant to a town lot during the administration of Lieutenant Governor DesBarres [Colonial Correspondence, Cape Breton, CO 217, Vol. 109, pp. 42-43, March 19, 1793.] In addition,  a Doctor Aubrey was paid for delivering boards and singles to the inhabitants of Sydney prior to December 25th, 1785 [Colonial Correspondence, Cape Breton: CO 217, V. 103, p. 132, August 21, 1786]. As well, a Frederick Aubery would submit a petition which was read in Council on October 1789. [Colonial Correspondence, Cape Breton, CO 217, V. 108, p. 324 – 326b, October 1, 1789 - May 16, 1790] Finally, according to a document of June 2, 1786: "Frederick Aubrey _______ 1 Do [lot] __ [W^o.] 5 _______ [in block] C [?, June 2, 1786, f. 145]]

[Note: For comparison purposes, on September 26, 1787, said Sparrow gave £ 516 13 shillings Nova Scotia Currency to John Smith  for property measuring 40x100 feet, without structures, located in Block A, Lot 8, facing the Esplanade plus for two other properties [Public Archives of Nova Scotia, RG 47, Registry of Deeds, Volume B, pp. 247-252 - Microfilm 17278]

• Mr. Macarmick died intestate and his daughter Catherine sold "Louisa Gardens" to Mr. George Edward Burchell. On December 29, 1885 Mr. George Edward Burchell sold "Louisa Gardens" to his brother Mr. James Thomas Burchell for the sum of $200.00. On May 21, 1903 part of the parcel of land formerly known as "Louisa Gardens" was sold by Mr. James T. Burchell and his wife Suzannah to Mr. William MacVay for one dollar. Mr. MacVay was a bricklayer who moved here from New Brunswick to work at the Dominion Iron and Steel Co. The lot by this time had been subdivided and was now only 41 feet by 100 feet. SYDNEY — Cindy Lou Worthington has been identified as the victim of a fire at 98 Charlotte St. earlier this week.

The 58-year-old died in the blaze that broke out late Sunday night at an apartment building in the city’s north end. Worthington was from Truro, N.S. but had been living in Sydney for the last couple of years.

An autopsy will be conducted today in Halifax.

A Sydney man tried to save his wife from their burning apartment on Sunday night, but thick, black smoke pushed him back, a tenant says.

Firefighters were called to 98 Charlotte St. just before 11 p.m.

By the time they arrived, the five-unit apartment building was fully engulfed in flames.

Cape Breton Regional Police said firefighters discovered a woman, in her 50s, in a bedroom on the second floor when they searched the building.

Her husband was rushed to the hospital and is in the intensive care unit. Police said it's believed he suffered from smoke inhalation.

Tenant Robert Stockley said he and the woman's husband tried to get her out.

Stockley said he could smell smoke when he got home Sunday night. The next minute, he heard yelling.

"I heard buddy hollering, 'Get up, get out, get up get … the place is on fire,'" he said.

The two men ran in through the kitchen, but the smoke was far too thick.

"You couldn't see her. It was just dark, blacker than black. And there was no way you could get her out. It was too fast. It was too quick," said Stockley.

Everyone else in the building escaped unharmed.

Police and officials with the fire marshal's office are investigating the cause of the fire.
